National Fire Prevention Month

Addresses all FWSU Action Plan Targets:

  • Student Centered Learning
  • Leadership in a Student Centered Learning Environment
  • Flexible Learning Environments
  • Engaged Community Partners

Over the past several weeks, our students and staff have been learning about fire safety with Fairfax Fire Chief Micah Genzlinger. Fire Chief Genzlinger has been engaging our students with important information appropriate for their age and grade level.

The presentations focused on increasing student awareness about a range of prevention and response strategies, with the goal of keeping all members of a household safe in the event of a fire. Dressed in his full firefighting gear and air pack, Fire Chief Genzlinger taught students in Grades K-2 about the importance of smoke detectors.

In the Grade 3/4 classrooms, Fire Chief Genzlinger shared more in-depth information about how smoke detectors work, as well as appropriate locations to maximize the alarm’s notification. Students also learned about procedures to remain safe in the event of a fire, such as remaining low to the ground and checking doors for heat before opening them. Finally, Fire Chief Genzlinger shared the importance of calling 911 and knowing your address.

We are appreciative of Fairfax Fire Chief Micah Genzlinger for his time and efforts to teach our students about fire safety and for forming positive relationships with our local fire responders. Our students learned so much and especially loved the opportunity to check out the fire engine up close.

Thank you Fire Chief Genzlinger and the Fairfax Fire Department for keeping our community safe!
